“I think I have sufficient force”:

Milroy, Ewell, and the Second Battle of Winchester


This year’s McCormick Civil War Institute will focus on the occupation tenure of Union Gen. Robert H. Milroy and the Second Battle of Winchester.  The tour will examine the complexities of Milroy’s time in Winchester and his defeat in mid-June as Gen. Richard Ewell’s Second Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Tour Itinerary


Saturday’s tour will be of the many pristine sites remaining from the occupation and battle, in town and in the field.


9-Noon:  Tour caravan departs Davis Hall for stops in downtown Winchester and beginning of 2nd Winchester tour including Mary Greenhow Lee House Site, Logan House, Hawthorne, Pritchard Farm, and defenses of Bowers’ Hill.


Noon-1:00 p.m.  Lunch at Shenandoah University


1-4:30 p.m. Continue tour of sites associated with the Second Battle of Winchester including West Fort/Yonley, Fahnestock House, Star Fort, Stephenson’s Depot (Old Milburn Road, McCann’s Lane, Old Milburn Cemetery), and Snowden Andrews Monument
