Dr. Petra Schweitzer
Dr. Petra Schweitzer is Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and a member of the program in Women Studies. She received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Emory University. Her scholarly work and teaching integrate a number of fields within the discipline of Comparative Literature (especially French and German Holocaust literature). She teaches in French and German focusing on elementary language courses and “Women and the Holocaust” in the Program of Women Studies with a specialization in Holocaust studies, comparative literature, testimony and trauma studies. She also teaches freshmen courses with a concentration on Global Genocide studies. In her classes, she is embracing digital teaching and technological innovations.
A past recipient of the Wilkins Award and the FYS Teaching Excellence Award, she is a committed educator helping her students to achieve academic excellence. As an active member of Shenandoah University’s community, she engages in collective projects with colleagues at SU as well as other institutions. In 2010, SU and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum hosted an international conference, “Bearing Witness: Memory, Representation and Pedagogy in the post-Holocaust Age,” on the university’s campus. She is an active member of SU’s Global Film Festival and previously co-organized the Tournées French Film Festival for six years with Professor Gina Daddario, Department of Mass Communication.
